Semi di Lino
Choosing the right hair care products can be a daunting task, there are so many variables to consider…. Such as what is normal hair? Is my hair dry or damaged? What do all these ingredients do? before you know it you are in hair care hell picking a product in the hope it is the right one for you.
Well, we are here to help you reach your hair goals by explaining the Semi di Lino range. We will explain which regime works best on which hair type, how to identify and recognise your own hair type and to help you decipher all those wonder ingredients, by the end of this post you will be an expert.
The best place to start is with hair types, within the Semi di Lino range we talk about 3 main hair types: normal, dry and damaged.
Normal hair: is very subjective, what is normal hair?
What is normal to me may not necessarily be normal to someone else. So, for clarity normal for our purposes is hair that has not been subjected to excess styling or any chemical aggressors such as colouring, chemical straightening, perms or Brazilian blow dry. This hair will have a strong cortex and the cuticle (outer layer) will lie flat.
You can check this by holding a few strands of hair between your thumb and forefinger and slide them along the hair shaft towards your scalp. If your hair feels smooth you have little or no damage to the cuticle, you have “normal” hair! If your hair feels quite rough this means you have some damage to the cuticle and your hair is either dry or damaged.
Dry: hair is quite common and can be caused by many things including excessive styling, environmental stress, pollution, hormones, medication, stress, poor diet……. the list goes on. If you have tested your hair (as described above)and the surface of the hair is rough, this means the cuticle is open causing moisture to escape. You will notice that the hair is dull, lacks shine, gets tangled quite easily and coloured hair may fade at the ends.
Side note: Curly hair is generally more on the dry side because the shape of the hair makes it harder for the cuticles to lay flat against each other and therefore they lose moisture. In straight hair the cuticles lay flat allowing them to lock in moisture.
Damaged: hair is possibly the most difficult of the hair types to diagnosis yourself, as it has some of the same characteristics of dry hair, however damage to the hair starts on the cuticle layer and progresses to the internal structure of the hair.
One of the main causes of damaged hair is excessive chemical stress through bleaching, colour changing, chemical straightening, perms etc. Frequently subjecting your hair to these types of processes without taking extra care of it can cause holes to form in the hair structure and weaken it.
To check if your hair is damaged take one strand of hair, wet it and hold it between your thumb and forefinger on both hands then gently pull and release:
- If the hair springs back to its original shape your hair is probably only dry.
- If the hair keeps stretching and does not spring back to shape your hair is damaged.
- If the hair snaps your hair is damaged.
Hopefully after reading this you are now a little clearer as to which hair type you have, so let’s discuss the 3 crossover active ingredients you will find across the whole of the Semi di Lino range.
First the good news all of Semi di Lino shampoos are sulphate free and the whole range is free from paraffins and mineral oils.
All of the shampoos have a rich pearlescent texture where a little goes a long way, we recommend that you always shampoo your hair twice – the first shampoo is to cleanse your hair and the second shampoo is left for up to 3 minutes, this helps the shampoo to fully work its magic.
With the conditioner and treatment masks we recommend 1 scoop for short/medium length hair, 2 scoops for longer hair (a teaspoon is usually a good measuring tool) and is left for up to 5 minutes.
Ideal if you have ‘normal’ hair, there are 4 products within the range: Illuminating low shampoo, illuminatingconditioner,Illuminating maskand Extraordinary leave-in fluid. This is one of the only ranges where we have a conditioner and a mask.
The main difference between the two is that the mask is much more concentrated. The conditioner is ideal for fine hair and the mask for thicker hair, which ever you choose leave for up to 5 minutes.
There is one more active ingredient throughout the Illuminating range, Multivitamin complex, this vitamin complex gives new energy to the hair fiber, has antioxidant protective and softening properties, revitalizing the hair fiber.
As the name suggests this range is also all about nourishment and hydration. There are 5 products in the range: Nutritive low shampoo, Nutritive mask, Nutritive leave in conditioner and Nutritive detangling fluid.
As above if you have fine hair and are a bit apprehensive about using a mask, use the leave in conditioner instead, it will condition the hair whilst offering some protection against styling – however I would recommend that Thermal protection or Blow dry cream from Style stories is used for optimum heat protection.
The extra active ingredient in this range is Nutri-sugars,these nourishing and moisturising molecules are extracted from honey. Honey is amazing it draws in moisture from the atmosphere and pulls it into the hair helping to maintain moisture levels.
Is all about strength, protein and rebuilding the damage that has been done on the internal and external of the hair. This is a 3-step programme consisting of Reparative low shampoo, Reparative mask andReparative lotion. For best results we would recommend that you use the complete 3 step programme, when the hair feels more resistant then it is time to move onto the Nutritive range.
The additional active ingredient is Bamboo marrow,Bamboo is very similar to hair in the way that it is formed, it has a strong protective outer layer that is both flexible and elastic, this makes it resilient and resistant to breaking. So, by adding this marrow to Reparativewe are replenishing the hairs protein and elasticity (stretch factor) whilst maintaining flexibility.
Two more specialised ranges that have recently been introduced to the Semi di Lino portfolio are specifically tailored for fine hair Volumizing/volumeand curly/wavy hair Curls/Enhancing.
Specifically designed for the needs of fine hair. As a brand we are mindful that if you have fine hair you may not always feel comfortable using a conditioner/balm on your hair, styling products that may weight the hair down and need protection against weather can flatten fine hair within minutes.
With this in mind we have created a 3-step programme to help give gentle volume and intense body, you will not just achieve superficial volume you will also get thickening of each individual hair strand.
The range consists of Volumizing low shampoo, Volumizing mousse conditioner which should be left on up to 5 minutes and rinsed out, and a leave in volumizing spray to be used before drying, thermal protection spray should also be used to give lightweight heat protection to the length and ends.
Two more technologies have been added to work along side Urban defence, Color fix complex and Shine fix complex.
Climate proof a protective barrier, it keeps your hair hydrated against humidity and temperature change. It wraps itself round the hair creating a film against humidity whilst retaining moisture.
Volume boost complex reconstructs the hair from the inside, fine hair acquires more volume and longer lasting effects, increasing the diameter of the hair without weighing it down.
Within the Curls range it is our aim to enhance every type of curl from a gentle beachy wave to a tight coil curl. Curls and waves need extra hydration without being too heavy, but also protection from external moisture without coating the curls.
We have 7 products within the curls range that do just that:
- Enhancing low shampoo suitable for all curls
- Hydrating co washwhich is a foam free cleansing conditioner ideal for medium to thick hair and textured hair. Apply to damp hair, massage through and leave a few minutes then rinse. We recommend this be used alongside the enhancing low shampoo not in place of it.
- Enhancing conditioner this can be either a leave in or rinsed out conditioner and is best suited for fine soft curls.
- Enhancing maskideal for thicker, course more textured curls as with all our mask and conditioner it should be left on for up to 5 minutes.
- Defining cream is ideal for all hair types, it is a leave in cream designed to enhance the shape of your curls whilst replenishing moisture, it can also protect the hair up to 230◦
- Reactivating spray ideal for all hair types, this spray can be used several times a day to reactivate your curls, just spray on, style with your hands, and you are ready to go.
- Multi benefit oilcan be used on all hair types but works best on medium/thick.
As well as Urban defence pro, Color fix complex, Shine fix complex and Climate proof we have:
You will notice that with in the Semi di Lino range there are not any styling or heat protection products. Heat protection and styling is not the main emphasis here, Semi di Lino is a hair care line not a styling line our main focus is to solve hair and scalp issues.
However, we do have a styling range within AlfaParf called Style stories these products are encouraged to be used together with the Semi di Lino range.
Two lightweight products we recommend which are suitable for all hair types and offer exceptional heat protection are Blowdry cream and Thermal protect.
Blowdry cream is used on damp hair, it gives increased body, fights frizz and speeds up the drying process.
Thermal protection can be used on damp or dry hair and is a dry spray formulation ensuring the hair does not become excessively wet before styling with straighteners or tongs.
Style stories has a product to meet all your hair needs and I encourage you to play around with them, but these are definitely the 2 must have products that you should be using when heat styling your hair.
